Get to know Vascular Surgeon Dr. Bernardo D. Martinez, who serves patients throughout the State of Ohio.

Dr. Martinez is a seasoned vascular surgeon and pioneering robotic surgeon. He specializes in disorders relating to the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems, as well as focuses on aortic robotic-assisted surgery for treating the disabling thoracic outlet syndrome. 

Practicing in Ohio, he is affiliated with ProMedica Flower Hospital, the University of Toledo Medical Center, Mercy Health-St. Anne Hospital, and ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He prides himself on bringing charisma to his patients and meticulous attention to patient safety in his surgical procedures. 

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the National University of Cuyo in Argentina in 1970. He then went on to perform his residency in general surgery at SUNY Buffalo in 1975, and his residency in vascular surgery at Cleveland Clinic in 1977. 

He has been involved in minimally invasive robotic surgery since 1997 while at Stanford University. While there, he spent one year conducting basic research on robotic surgery, which was transformed into the clinical arena.

Dedicated to surgical excellence, Dr. Martinez is board-certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is a member of the Society of Vascular Surgeons and the Midwestern Vascular Society.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.
